Dishonored director Harvey Smith thinks there's still room for big-budget immersive sims: 'When it really comes together and it has the budget behind it and the team, you end up with Deus Ex or Dishonored'

Should immersive sims rein in their budgets? Thief designer Randy Smith Evergreen thinks so. We chatted to him last month, where he said a lot of immersive sims are in "an arms race to be bigger and better", but that the size of the audience and the competition from other big-budget games makes that a mistake... A multi-month delay for Deus Ex turned into a huge payoff for one of its best characters, says designer Harvey Smith

Nobody likes game delays. Sure, a delay is temporary and suck is forever, as Gabe Newell once said, but it still chafes. But sometimes a little extra development time can go a very long way. In a new interview with the NoClip podcast, immersive sim maestro Harvey Smith shared one such story about Deus Ex, explaining how it leveraged some extra post-production time to give a much bigger role to one...

In 1997, Warren Spector told us the upcoming PC classic Deus Ex was inspired by Final Fantasy, Miyamoto, and 'the console guys'

Last year for Christmas, a good friend got me the best gift of all: Love The Orange Box the 1997 PC Gamer US "Holiday Extravaganza" issue, 456 pages of news, reviews, interviews, and, crucially, retro full page ads from the late '90s golden age of PC gaming... Read more.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution could've had a track from the original game's composer but it was rejected for not being the 'right fit,' and in hindsight he says they were right

Deus Ex is just so damn great. I know we say that a lot around here, but you can never say it enough, so I'm saying it again: Deus Ex is great. One of the greatest ever. And one of the most distinctive elements of that greatness is its soundtrack, which like the game itself is great. It's so core to the experience, in fact, that when Eidos Montreal dropped the 2010 teaser telling the world that De...

It's brutal out there: Deus Ex and Unreal composer says he's submitted 50 resumes and gotten one interview in the last year

If you don't pay close attention to game credits you may not know the name Alexander Brandon, but you've almost certainly heard his work. The composer of Deus Ex's soundtrack has some 30 years of games to his name as a musician (Unreal, Stormgate), audio director (Wasteland 3, Neverwinter Nights 2), and even voice actor—who could forget his performances as "Flayed Goat" in Pagan Online or "Additio...

Deus Ex's art director says ugly new remaster "did not need to happen"

Deus Ex is one of those series that would break the internet should a new entry ever get revealed. It sounds like we came close, but Embracer reportedly scrapped a new Deus Ex back in 2024 before it even entered full production. The original paved the way for so many of the brilliant immersive sims and stealthy shooters that followed, and there's a desire for more from that universe. Knowing this,...

Deus Ex's influence on Elon Musk 'may be its longest, worst legacy,' says its writer

Elon Musk thinks Deus Ex is "one of the best games ever". It's not exactly a hot take. But his taste in games also displays an impressive lack of self-awareness. Musk sees himself as an outsider and heroic figure taking on the status quo, despite being the world's richest man, the owner of X, and a sometimes-ally of Donald Trump... Read more.

You can thank John Romero's hard-partying ways for the suits giving Deus Ex the extra dev time it needed: 'These British guys would just get hammered with the Dallas team for three days straight'

PC Gamer recently dispatched Robert Zak to chat with the senior developers behind Deus Ex, in order to mark the 25th anniversary of a true classic. Among the many nuggets are that the initial pitch for the game starred Jake Shooter, supercop, and that the team never really thought that one of the most political games you could imagine was political at all... Warren Spector was so desperate to make Deus Ex that it almost became a Command & Conquer RPG: 'I was going to find a way to make it one way or another, even if it meant making another damn sci-fi game!'

Deus Ex recently celebrated its 25 th birthday. But in a parallel universe, PC gamers with eight arms and two heads are commemorating the 25 th anniversary of a first-person Command & Conquer game to blow C&C Renegade out of the water. That's because Warren Spector's platonic ideal of the immersive sim very nearly became part of Westwood's beloved strategy universe, so desperate was the legendary ...

Deus Ex devs say they weren't trying to make a statement when they made one of the most political games of all time: 'What I think is the right future for humanity is irrelevant. It's all about what each player thinks'

Deus Ex marks one of the first times I realised videogames could be about things, man. That conversation between the two NSF troopers on Liberty Island—where they discuss the reduction of people to version numbers and functionality—was a real eye-opener for a young Josh who had previously only played Rayman and Quake 2... The game that would become Deus Ex originally starred Jake Shooter, supercop

Deux Ex is the PC classic we all love to bang on about: the FPS that arguably created the immersive sim, releasing players from the shackles of linear corridors and mindless baddies into a world where freedom of approach was the secret sauce. Its plot and stylings were also sophisticated for the time, with the player a blank slate in a world full of grey areas and ethically dubious choices... Read...
